Our business panelists will share their experiences for being and staying in business throughout these challenging times. Jason Kenney is going to join the virtual tables and bring special greetings and chat with as many guests as possible.

Panel One: Alberta Finance Ministers who rocked the boat and the balance sheet

An opportunity to learn from the experience of past provincial finance ministers who faced strong headwinds in balancing their budgets when faced with insurmountable challenges.

Grace MA (MC)

Grace has been a stellar volunteer for 20 years and is hands-up the favourite MC at many of Calgary’s best events. Born in Hong Kong she immigrated to Red Deer at the age of 10 and now lives in Calgary with husband Larry and is mother to four beautiful daughters and Pho Pho to four wonderful grandkids.

Travis Toews (Host)

Travis was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on April 16, 2019, as the MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti. A lifelong resident of Alberta, Toews and his wife live in the Grande Prairie region and have three children and seven grandchildren. He has considerable business experience, and holds a CPA, CMA accounting designation and, prior to pursuing business interests, spent twelve years in a public accounting practice. In the past fifteen years, he and his wife Kim, have invested in, managed and grown a corporate family cattle ranching operation and an oilfield environmental company.

Shirley McLellan

Shirley served as an MLA from 1987 to 2007. She served as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finanance, Minister of Health, Minister of AADAC, Minister of Seniors, Minister of Community Development, Minister International & Intergovernmental Relations, and Minister of Agriculture, Food & Rural Development. McClellan was selected to be the 12th Chancellor of the University of Lethbridge and currently sits on the Horse Racing Alberta Tribunal.

Jim Dinning

Jim Dinning is a long-standing PC/UCP member dating back to 1975 and served in cabinet for 11 years serving as Minsiter of Finance, Minister of Community & Occupational Health, and Minister of Education. He is chancellor emeritus of the University of Calgary and a proud member of the Order of Canada and is currently the Corporate Director and Board Chair, Russel Metals Inc.

Pat Nelson

Pat worked for 15 years in the energy sector before being elected to the legislature. She served as the first female Energy Minister, and as Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, Government Services, and Finance. Pat served as the CEO and President of the Calgary Health Trust from 2005 to 2010 and is an active volunteer for the "Run for the Cure", Juvenile Diabetes, and Animal rescues.

Perspectives from the trenches: when sports, medicine and commercial real estate practices need to survive and thrive in a tsunami of change and uncertainty. What have they learned to live without and what are they finding they need to do to survive?

Ric McIver (Host)

Ric was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on April 23, 2012 as the MLA for Calgary-Hays. He was re-elected on May 5, 2015, and again on April 16, 2019. An Albertan by choice, calling Calgary home since 1981. Married to Christine, he is the father of four and grandfather of three, McIver served three terms on Calgary’s City Council, bringing his experience as a business owner and family man to offer a common-sense, fiscally-responsible viewpoint to Council and now the Legislature. Outside his role in elected politics, Ric has been passionate about helping Calgarians and Albertans by listening, learning and taking sensible actions. He is a long-term volunteer with the Calgary Stampede. The favourite part of his job is speaking to school kids and supporting good ideas.

Perry Berezan

Perry played nine years in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, Minnesota North Stars and the San Jose Sharks. Since retirement from the NHL in 1993, Perry completed his business degree and then in 1997 successfully transitioned to his current career as an investment advisor at “The Berezan Sherven Group” at National Bank Financial in Calgary. Perry is recognized for his community contributions through the Calgary Flames Alumni and numerous charitable organizations in the Calgary area. They include Calgary Special Olympics, Gordie Howe CARES (The Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Education Society), KidSport, Cerebral Palsy Calgary and many others. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 Perry made three heart-warming excursions to Afghanistan to visit our Canadian Forces in Kandahar with the NHL Alumni. Perry lives in Calgary with his wife Marie and they have three grown kids aged 28, 25 and 22 yrs old.

Patricia Phillips

Over the last three decades, Patricia’s resilient leadership has focused on diversity and inclusion and inspired the communities she serves. She has shattered glass ceilings in three traditionally male-dominated industries, as a financial analyst on Wall Street, and as a CEO in both the energy and real estate sectors. Currently, she is the CEO and Chair of the PBA Group of Companies. She sits on several boards focused on the betterment of the community and the workplace, including headversity, Glenbow Museum, and Women in Tourism and Hospitality. Patricia also co-chairs the Board of Governors of Look Forward Calgary, an organization connecting communities, political organizations, and future candidates to build a resilient, thriving, and inclusive Calgary in the next municipal election.

Dr. Adriaan Viljoen

Dr. Viljoen was born and educated in South Africa, immigrated to Canada and known to his patients as Dr. V. Dr. V., has been in the medical aesthetics industry for the past 21 years, however he started his medical career as a family physician in Saskatchewan and continues to have a family medicine clinic as well as his cosmetic practice. Both were impacted during Covid-19. He entered the aesthetics arena very early on with the introduction of Botox to the medical community. Dr. V. is a member of Pride in Business and has been providing both wellness and cosmetic services to clients in the Calgary area.

7.00 PM to 7.45 PM.      Everyone comes back to the main room for the second panel discussion as Ric McIver asks some probing questions of three business leaders from sports, medicine and commercial real estate worlds 

7.45 PM to 9.00 PM.      Evening wrap up. If guests wish, they can go back to cocktail tables to continue networking.
